Silent Film at the David Rubinstein Atrium at Lincoln Center

On Friday, July, 25 at 7pm, I will be accompanying the rarely screened 1926 silent film Love ’em and Leave ’em starring Evelyn Brent, Louise Brooks and Lawrence Gray. The show will be presented at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. Okay, so where exactly is this place?

The David Rubinstein Atrium is located on the west side of Broadway between W. 62 and W. 63 streets, nestled between AAA and a closed Duane Reade that’s next to an open Starbucks. The space goes all the way through the building from Broadway to Columbus Ave., and there are entrances on either side. The Atrium is a few blocks north of any of the Columbus Circle subway stops, and just a few blocks below the number 1 train’s 66th Street stop.

Inside the Atrium there is a public gathering space that doubles as a performing space with seating areas and, at times, a place to get coffee and food. There are also ticket windows for concerts at the various Lincoln Center venues, as well as a branch of the TKTS booth for Broadway shows. There is a giant, very wide video wall with projections throughout the day by a pair of digital video projectors. For the silent film screening on July 25th, 16mm projectors will be set up, and a Yamaha upright piano is being brought in for me to play.

The program is being presented as part of the Lincoln Center Summer for the City series by the NYPL Library for the Performing Arts, through the branch’s Reserve Film and Video Collection. Elena Rossi-Snook, who is the head of the Collection, will introduce the show, and she and I will do a Q & A following the screening. Love ’em and Leave ’em (1926) will be preceded by the Charley Chase comedy Movie Night (1929). Both films will be presented on 16mm in prints from the LPA’s collection.

The show is free and it’s general seating – first come, first served. Want an edge on getting a seat?

Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City has something called Fast Track, which is a way to sign up ahead of time online, to “reserve” your getting in to the venue. Fast Track sign-up availability for this show begins Monday July 21 at 12 noon. I encourage you to mark your calendar, set a reminder, etc, and that you hop right on the Fast Track page at the crack of noon this Monday. Just in case there’s a land rush on seating on the evening of the show.

The Fast Track page is here.
The event page with info about the film is here.

I hope to see you on Friday, July 25th at 7:00pm for Love ’em and Leave ’em and Movie Night. Neither of these rare silents are available on home video, so this should be a real treat!
